Spike, the betta fish with character, dies at 1
Many people wrote Spike off as just another fish in a bowl, but he was something special to owner Katie Fick.
“He really does have his own personality,” she said on several occasions. “He’s very entertaining to watch. I often wonder what he’s thinking.”
Spike, a betta fish and one-time model, died in his bowl from unknown causes Oct. 21, 2010. He was 1 year old.
Fick purchased Spike with her roommate, Jennifer Coit, on the first day of spring in 2010.
“He stood out in the Petco fish section because of his bright,
bold colors and high-energy level,” Coit said.
Spike’s interests included attacking the thermometer in his bowl, swimming sprints, chilling, and eating. He also enjoyed looking at himself in a mirror — as many models do.
In addition to Fick and Coit, Spike is survived by his friend, Sushi of Hanover; and millions of fish in the sea.
Current Instincts knows how devastating the death of a pet can be — regardless of the species. If you would like to have an obituary written about your pet, please email us.

RIP Spike. Isn’t the photo a little gratuitous though?
